kinfolk style christmas giftwrap

We have decorated a tree, covered our house with twinkling lights and I am wearing my favorite wool sweater (even though it feels like Spring outside.. stupid global warming.. :( ). You would say we're all set and ready for the Holidays. But wait! There is something missing under our tree. The only thing we can find now is Nalu, trying to get her head around why there is a tree inside. We definitely need presents. Lots of pretty gift-wrapped presents.

I always support the makers, the small brands and local stores. We don't want a city centre full of flagship stores do we? So I buy my gifts from artists, the cute bookstore in town and of course at my friend Rena's shop: Hear Hear Amsterdam.

A few weeks ago I decorated her shop window for Christmas and on December 23th I will be there to wrap your Hear Hear presents! Kinfolk style, so lots of kraft paper, twine and eucalyptus. It's my Christmas gift to you! Be sure to stop by for the prettiest handmade ceramics, books, jewelry and accessoires, have it wrapped and put it under your tree. Easy does it!

You don't need a lot to create something beautiful for your loved one. Kraft paper, twine and a pretty twig. Maybe add a personal label or write a sweet message on the paper, but that's it! I used different types of dried eucalyptus for these presents, but a few sprigs of pine-tree, berries or even a dried hydrangea will do. And you can always mix it up in terms of twine. Maybe a different color for each family member?

Will I see you the 23th? I can't wait to send you home with lots of beautiful gifts (both inside and out)!

Hear Hear, Heisteeg 8, Amsterdam Opening times on Dec 23: 11:00 - 19:00

See you then!

honeymoon a go go! leaving for Costa Rica

Borneo rainforest - Anne van MiddenI took this photo during our WNF trip to Borneo, 3 years ago. It was my first and only trip overseas and it was amazing. I have been dreaming about these green leaves ever since and am just in love with all those shades of green!

This photo is a little reminder: I will be travelling through Costa Rica this month. If you send me an email/message, I will answer it when I get back. So if you don't hear anything.. it's not you, it's me! (honeymoon and work are like oil and water, you can't mix them!) :)

Follow me on instagram for updates and 'happy couple on a tropical beach/I hate you' photos! ;) @annevanmidden

Happy Holidays!!

happy holidays - simple Christmas wreath | Inspire StylingI'm making some last minute Christmas wreaths today, to make our living room look extra festive for the next couple of days. I saved the branches we cut off our Christmas tree for this. Planning ahead and less waste, win-win! :) This is my first one, I photographed it before the daylight was completely gone (oh those dark winter days!). My entire desk is covered in green clippings from our garden now, so I guess I will have to make some more today ;)

And yes, I'm doing this at the very last minute, I planned to decorate the entire home before this weekend. Inspired by all the amazing (overseas) stylists I follow, I set that impossible goal every year! Never works out. I don't know how other people do this, I guess I will have to work on that planning ahead thing, haha!

We don't have too much plans for Christmas, except for a lunch at my sisters place, so we will probably spend the Holidays like we do every year: In our living room, with a pile of blankets, pillows, movies, snacks and wine. Just the two of us, our furry friend Nalu and our sweet little Kalare, who is no longer with us but will be in our hearts forever.

I hope you have a wonderful time, filled with joy, love and magical moments!

ENJOY! ♥ Anne

the smell of the Holidays

the smell of the Holidays, eucalyptus branches | Inspire Styling journalAre you getting ready for the Holidays? I'm slowly getting into that good old Christmas vibe! The pretty lights everywhere, darker days, songs on the radio.. I love it! Especially in my hometown Amersfoort, which already is a postcard come to live without all the Christmas decorations. You should definitely pay a visit this December, if you can :)

This weekend I bought some Eucalyptus branches from the flower market. I was quite hard to pick something, all those lovely berries, leaves and pinetree wreaths.. But Eucalyptus was this weeks winner and their scent is giving our home that typical Holiday-season smell. the smell of the Holidays, eucalyptus branches | Inspire Styling journalthe smell of the Holidays, eucalyptus branches | Inspire Styling journal We still have to get a Christmas tree, but untill then these branches will do the trick! (can't wait for a tree though!)

Enjoy and be merry! ♥ Anne

tiny adventures: greenhouse wanderers

greenhouse wanderer | Inspire Styling journalA few weeks ago, on my birthday, me and my love wandered through a small, old greenhouse in Utrecht. It was an Autumn day and although the leaves were turning yellow and red, the air was warm. Mother Nature made the most of the Indian Summer this year.

Strolling through greenhouses is my favorite thing to do, so if I know there is such a place in a city I visit I will look it up. I guess I'm not really a city-let's go shopping-kind of person. I used up the full percentage of my iPhone to shoot a lot of pictures, as I wasn't carrying my camera with me that day. So much beauty! greenhouse wanderer | Inspire Styling journal These massive waterlillies (Victoria amazonica) are the show-stopper of the Oude Hortus. They are absoluty amazing, so delicate and strong at the same time. The leaves can grow up to 1,5 meters in Summer, worth checking out I would say! greenhouse wanderer | Inspire Styling journalgreenhouse wanderer | Inspire Styling journalgreenhouse wanderer | Inspire Styling journal Even fallen bougainville petals have the most beautiful color! This is magenta at it's best! We tried to grow a bougainville in our garden, but the Dutch climate is way too harsh on this pretty Medditerranean plant. Adding to bucketlist: Spotting a bougainville in it's natural habitat! greenhouse wanderer | Inspire Styling journalgreenhouse wanderer | Inspire Styling journalgreenhouse wanderer | Inspire Styling journal These little crawling plant was incredibly soft and airy, it felt like some sort of bouncy cloud. I actually petted this plant, very gently of course. Do not do this if you can't be careful! (PS: Look at our hands! They say: "We are married!" :) ) greenhouse wanderer | Inspire Styling journalgreenhouse wanderer | Inspire Styling journalgreenhouse wanderer | Inspire Styling journalgreenhouse wanderer | Inspire Styling journal I have been to Utrecht lots of times, but I never knew about this small gem in the city centre. The Oude Hortus is part of the Universiteitsmuseum, the entrance fee for just the greenhouse&garden is close to zero. The greenhouse itself isn't really that big, but the atmosphere is nice and the garden very pretty! The perfect place to escape the busy streets and shops. You can even take a break at the Gingko café, where they serve coffee, cake, lunch and wine. One of the oldest Ginkgo trees (250 years!) grows in this garden, hence the name.

Oh and we found out you can get married at this place! Can't wait till I can plan&style a wedding here!

If you happen to be in Utrecht, remember to visit this beautiful, calm place behind the Dick Bruna museum :)

green overload at woonbeurs 2014

I visited the Woonbeurs last week and one thing was pretty obvious: plants definitely are back in our homes! The entire fair looked like a greenhouse! And yes, there was some black&white, pastel and a few tiny leftovers of the neon trend. But overall, it was green, green and more green! Needless to say.. I loved it!woonbeurs 2014 - plants | Inspire Styling journal I posted some pictures that same day with the popular #urbanjunglebloggers hashtag on Instagram. It's great to see that nature is everywhere now, I do hope people will see it as more than just a hype and don't forget about their plants and environment as soon the trend is over. But I can see some changes happening and I think a big group of lovely human beings will care for our beautiful world. Including myself, of course :)

Here's what I saw and liked at Woonbeurs 2014.. *iPhone pictures only* woonbeurs 2014 - plants | Inspire Styling journal Like I said.. lots of plants everywhere. These pretty guys and much, much more! The plant 'garland' was quite popular, I saw these at multiple stands. In this collage two of them: bottom right and upper left :) woonbeurs 2014 - Six and Sons stand | Inspire Styling journalwoonbeurs 2014 - Six and Sons stand | Inspire Styling journal This stand belongs to the always fabulous Sixs&Sons, they sell vintage items and new products. If their name doesn't ring a bell, you should check out their collection! I love just about everything they have :) woonbeurs 2014 - Combitex stand | Inspire Styling journalwoonbeurs 2014 - Combitex stand | Inspire Styling journalwoonbeurs 2014 - copper sunburst mirror | Inspire Styling journal A sunburst mirror is still on my wishlist and this one was looking pretty cool! You can see a part of the More Than Classic/Eigen Huis&Interier home reflected in the centre. They had a tropical/sunroom vibe going on, but in a very polished way. Hence the shiny mirror.. :) woonbeurs 2014 | Inspire Styling journalwoonbeurs 2014 - VTWonen | Inspire Styling journalwoonbeurs 2014 - Karwei stand, styling by StyleCookie | Inspire Styling journalwoonbeurs 2014 - Karwei stand, styling by StyleCookie | Inspire Styling journal The StyleCookie ladies did a great job styling the Karwei stand! Everybody loved it, it was one of the most inspiring stands on the fair. They combined a lot of plants, vintage items, creative solutions and DIY ideas for a complete re-brand of a DIY store. Well done!woonbeurs 2014 - beetles dress - Inspire Styling journal This dress made of beetle shields made me think twice. I love it, I even designed a tropical paradise collection once, based on these shields. But I wonder where they got these beetles, since there were a LOT of shields. I will try to think positive and assume they were collected in a good way.. *still thinking twice though*woonbeurs 2014 - Puur Anders at Ariadne at home | Inspire Styling journal My dear collegae Miranda from Puur Anders was working at the Ariadne home, to inspire visitors and promote her new collection. Remember the gorgeous 'hidden memories' shoot we did? Miranda was working on some new items with these pictures on it! So cool to see the process and to see our photos come to live in her work. woonbeurs 2014 - Puur Anders at Ariadne at home | Inspire Styling journalwoonbeurs 2014 - Plint stand | Inspire Styling journal I had a great time at the Woonbeurs, especially because I saw a lot of my Instagram/Twitter friends. It's kind of like a game, to match the profile pictures with real life persons, but it's so cool to meet social media friends. And I had so much fun with Jurianne, Geertje, Imke (always present!) and her sister. I even ended up at a cocktail hour/reception/farewell party at the 101woonideeen home (so so sad they won't be there next year!!).

Woonbeurs 2014: Great networking, drinking, laughing, sharing stories and getting inspired! :)
